THE BABYSITTERS!!

By Lucille M. Griswold

The children asked please babysit
To us this seemed just great
It would be the perfect time for us
To bond and communicate

There were tons of wash and good
Food too and the children were up to par
We heard all about their exciting lives
As we transported them by car

The job we hadn’t counted on
That was the hardest to be met
Was the fact that we must also bond
With the ubiquitous household pet

Nike the cat who seems so benign
As she struts around with grace
Would just as soon raise her tiny paw
And bat us in the face

Midnight and Scampy every morning
Sit upon hind legs
This is their daily ritual
As for a treat they beg

There’s the frog that was so tiny
I barely saw him there
And opening hamster Frisky’s cage
Was more than I could bear

What can I say about the ferret
Stuck between the mattress and the bed
It was horribly traumatic for us
To tell them he was dead

Lucky loved my furry coat and
Max and Princess yap
They all take such great pleasure
in jumping on my lap

It really is quite cozy when they
Sit near us and cuddle
I rarely ever do object
As long as they don’t puddle

Sammy and Tiger the cats
Who are usually very quiet
Wait until you want to sleep
Then they scratch and make a riot

The newest pet grandkid is the
German Shepherd Blaze
He has a way of looking
That suggests he wants your praise

Be sure to close the bathroom door
Or they’ll have their little caper
When they run around and decorate
The house with rolls of toilet paper

The dog’s electric fence though
Created the biggest flap
It was not the dog who got the shock
It was I who got the ZAP!!
